Website maintenance cost in Australia: what you pay after launch

Budget for hosting or platform access, technical care and post-launch changes. A published hosting-and-care example below costs AUD139/month including GST, with 15 minutes of monthly support. A cheaper platform subscription leaves a different amount of work with you. Compare the bill alongside who will update, check and repair the site.

A website can be online, secure and increasingly out of date. The team photo is two hires behind. Your main service has changed. The enquiry form still sends to someone who left last year.

Keeping the software running and keeping the business information current are different jobs. When a quote groups both under “maintenance”, find out which work it actually includes.

How much does website maintenance cost?

Start with the system you are actually buying. Hosted builders, online stores, self-hosted WordPress and custom-coded websites do not produce the same bills.

The following comparisons separate the platform purchase from the work needed to keep your business website useful. These are published examples, not market averages.

Common builders, CMS platforms and online stores

Prices were checked on 08/10/2026. Annual-billing figures are monthly equivalents, usually paid upfront. USD is not converted to AUD. Confirm applicable tax and renewal charges.

Custom code, including AstroThere is no universal Astro monthly site plan. Price the actual host, CMS, connected services and developer care separately.A chosen implementation, not one bundled subscription. Static pages and server-backed functions create different running costs. The hosting comparison below makes those components visible.

What custom hosting and a separate CMS can cost

Astro is a framework used to build websites, not the company hosting them. Its deployment documentation covers several hosting routes.

A static site serves pages built in advance. A site using logins, live database queries or other server-backed functions needs the relevant additional services.

ComponentPublished starting chargeWhat can increase the bill or remain outside it
Netlify hostingCurrent credit-based plans: Free USD0, Personal USD9/month, Pro from USD20/month.Usage consumes credits. Check the limit and recharge setting, team needs and extra services. Older accounts can have different legacy billing.
Vercel hostingPro USD20/month before applicable taxes, including one deploying seat and USD20 usage credit.Additional deploying seats and excess usage cost extra. Free Hobby is restricted to non-commercial personal use, not a normal commercial-site comparison.
Cloudflare Pages and WorkersStatic asset delivery can be free. Workers Paid starts at USD5/account/month, plus excess usage.Functions, storage and databases have their own allocations. Free static delivery is not a promise that every part of the website costs nothing.
Sanity CMSFree plan; Growth USD15/seat/month, with higher usage charged separately. This is the content backend and editor environment. Price the public website's hosting separately. Required roles, seats, data and usage affect the CMS choice.
Self-hosted CMS or application backendQuote the selected server, database, storage and software licences.Someone must operate, update and recover those components. A free software licence does not include that work. Only budget components the actual build needs.

These are components, not alternative all-inclusive agency packages. Check which charges apply to an account, a website, a person or usage before comparing totals.

A simple Astro site with modest traffic can have a low infrastructure bill. Adding a paid CMS, bookings or a database changes that calculation. Developer support is another purchase again.

Ask the developer which parts need continuing care and how normal content changes get published. A cheap host is useful. It is not a substitute for that answer.

A care plan buys a different job

Fox & Lee's WordPress Essentials plan advertises AUD139/month including GST, with hosting, technical care and 15 minutes of monthly support. Its Pro plan advertises AUD259/month including GST and 120 minutes of support.

That explains why a care fee can exceed a builder subscription. You are buying somebody's agreed work as well as the platform or hosting. Check the covered tasks, not just the larger number.

Ask for the total recurring commitment, including suppliers paid directly. Then establish which necessary tasks remain yours. That gives you a budget you can use.

If you are still comparing the initial build price, start with our Melbourne website-cost guide.

Separate five kinds of ongoing cost

You do not need five separate invoices. You need to know where these five obligations sit, especially when one fee bundles several of them.

CostWhat you are paying forWhat to establish before signing
Hosting, platform and subscriptionsKeeping the site available, renewing its domain and retaining paid functionsWho pays each supplier, the renewal price and whether the charge is included in another fee
Technical upkeepUpdates, checks, monitoring, recovery and repair appropriate to the actual websiteWhich party performs the work, how issues are handled and what falls outside its responsibility
Requested changesUpdated content, new pages, design changes or functions your business asks forIncluded tasks or hours, approval of additional work and any expiry of unused time
Your team's workSupplying facts, content and approvals; publishing or checking changes where those tasks remain internalA named person, usable access and the ability to complete those tasks
Leaving or rebuildingTransfer, migration or replacement if you later change the arrangementWhat transfers, notice requirements and fees; keep this conditional cost separate from ordinary running costs

Platform charges can be required even when care is optional

A domain renewal, paid site plan or necessary app licence can be unavoidable for the website you selected. A separate agency retainer may be optional. Declining it means arranging the work another way, rather than deciding the work never needs doing.

Check whether the provider pays a subscription for you or simply manages an account you fund directly. If hosting is already included, adding the same hosting charge again overstates the cost. If it is excluded, leaving it out understates the commitment.

Introductory prices deserve their own line. Compare the renewal price, and establish what happens when a free first year or launch inclusion ends. A discounted start is useful, but it should not become the price you assume for the next five years.

For stores, keep payment processing and other sales-related charges visible too. They depend on how you sell and are outside the fixed-fee examples below.

Technical care needs to match the website

A WordPress site with themes and plugins presents different upkeep tasks from a website on a hosted platform. A custom-coded site has its own dependencies and connected services. Copying a generic care checklist between them can produce promises that make little sense.

For WordPress, identify responsibility for core software, themes, plugins, backups and checking the result after changes. WordPress's own upgrade guidance recommends usable backups before an update. An update button does not tell you who will recover the site if something goes wrong.

Managed hosting can cover some technical tasks. Confirm which ones. Do not assume that a host updating its software also tests your booking flow, rewrites a broken integration or repairs another supplier's work.

Ask about recovery as well as backups. Which parts of the website are covered? Who restores them, under what conditions, and what happens to changes made since the saved version?

Website changes need a separate allowance

Changing an existing paragraph is different from writing a new service page. Adding supplied images is different from commissioning photography. Updating an existing form is different from connecting a new CRM.

An hourly allowance can be useful for predictable small requests. Check which tasks qualify, whether unused time carries forward and how the provider approves work beyond the allowance. Also check whether coordination and testing count towards it.

For a quiet website, occasional paid changes may suit better than a large monthly allowance. For a site that changes frequently, predictable support can be worth buying. Choose against the work you expect, not how reassuring the package name sounds.

What our agency research revealed about ongoing support

In SOL STUDIOS' July and August 2026 mystery-shopping study, we compared agency conversations with quotes, proposals and terms. These were pre-signature observations, not tests of delivered service.

The tables cover all fourteen original agencies and the later Impressive Digital comparison, alongside SOL's current service model. Recorded offers are historical, not today's advertised tariffs.

Agencies where an ongoing price was recorded

All figures below are AUD. Written and verbal figures are distinguished; an unspecified tax or allowance is not silently filled in.

Do not assume hosting alone includes every update or requested change.
District MediaVerbal maintenance indication around AUD600/month, scaled to required work. Hosting was discussed separately. GST not specified for the maintenance figure.A continuing arrangement could include upkeep and be combined with marketing. No fixed hours or care service level was established. Obtain a written breakdown separating website work, hosting and marketing.
Impressive DigitalWritten Hosting & Maintenance fee: AUD99/month plus GST.WordPress hosting, design and technical updates, backups and security monitoring were described.Included change time and response commitments were not quantified. Confirm which requests the AUD99 covers rather than reading “updates” as unlimited development.
JTB StudiosVerbal indication around AUD3,000/month for optional continuing improvement. GST not specified. An arrangement to improve, optimise and adjust the website, rather than just buy platform access. No written allocation or complete hosting-and-care breakdown was received. Separate planned improvement from routine upkeep before comparing this with entry care fees.

Seriously Good DesignBasic maintenance was discussed at AUD180/month. This was a verbal indication; GST basis was not established.Optional ongoing maintenance was offered.A written care allocation was not received. Agencies where care was unpriced or handled another way

A missing maintenance quote is not evidence that an agency cannot provide support. These rows show what still needs settling before you can budget.

AgencyRecorded ongoing arrangementWhat the buyer needs priced or confirmed
The Hope FactoryShopify costs sit outside the build fee. Additional support uses separately purchased development time; its agreement gives time blocks a twelve-month validity unless varied. The required Shopify plan, apps and any support block's price, size, expiry and booking conditions.
Studio SondarOwner-paid Webflow plan, training videos and thirty days of post-launch support. No compulsory continuing agency retainer was identified. The ongoing Webflow configuration and separate price for specialist work after the included support period.
Spicy WebCustom Craft CMS work with training and optional continuing support. A project-specific hosting/care price was not supplied.Hosting, CMS licences and accepted support tasks, allowance, response coverage and fee for the proposed site.

oacdigitalWebsite work was referred to a partner; its continuing agency offer focused on marketing. No separate website-care quote was received. The web partner's care arrangement and how it coordinates with marketing. An SEO or ads retainer is not automatically a maintenance allowance.

What changes the buying decision

Three differences matter more than the order of the prices.

First, infrastructure, care and improvement are different purchases. Social Space's Core offer supplied an editor for owner changes. Percept priced three hours of continuing support. JTB discussed planned improvement. Their totals cannot be compared as if they buy identical work.

Second, bundled wording needs an actual total. Ven listed hosting and maintenance separately while describing some care under hosting. SOD's proposal contained two care prices. Neither ambiguity is solved by choosing the cheaper figure. Get the governing price and included tasks agreed together.

Third, access and expiry change what you must arrange later. Sondar's launch support ends. The Hope Factory's purchased time has a validity period. Social Space's editor allows owner changes, but someone must still supply and check them. Its transfer fee is conditional, not an ordinary monthly cost.

There are sensible reasons to choose each support model. The mistake is treating “maintenance included” as a complete answer when the work, allowance or continuing term is still unclear.

Who will actually keep the website current?

Technical maintenance does not tell your provider that you changed a service, stopped stocking a product or hired a new team member. Your business has to supply that information. The remaining responsibilities can sit with your team, your provider or both.

Take an ordinary service-page update. Someone must confirm the service details, write or approve the wording, publish the change and check the page. If the change affects an enquiry form, someone should also check its delivery and intended recipient.

A cloud connection keeps a website available, while a separate editor changes its service information and enquiry routing.
Keeping the site available and keeping business information current are different responsibilities.

You might be happy to supply the wording and have your provider publish it. You might want to edit it directly in the CMS. You might need writing and design help before anything is ready to upload. Those choices buy different amounts of work.

The same applies when several suppliers are involved. If a booking service changes its requirements, establish who coordinates with that supplier and who checks the connection afterwards. “Contact support” is incomplete when each support team looks after a different part.

At SOL STUDIOS, our Hosting and Management scope separates technical care from the allowance for minor website changes. Supplying finished content is different from commissioning new copy, design or functionality. Those larger tasks need their own scope.

If your accepted SEO or Google Ads engagement includes Hosting and Management, check what is included once and what remains separately payable. Establish what happens if the marketing engagement ends. Continuing care needs an accepted arrangement, or responsibility needs to transfer. It does not remain included indefinitely by accident.

Support coverage is another part of the purchase. Managed clients contact SOL through help@solstudiosdigital.com or by phone. SOL's management service window is Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm Melbourne time. Its complete-outage response target is four business hours within that window. That is a response target, not a promise to resolve every fault within four hours.

This is also why a maintenance report should be judged against the service purchased. Reporting can be useful, but some arrangements communicate around requests, incidents and required actions instead. An absent monthly report alone does not prove that no care took place. Nor does a report prove someone is improving your marketing.

Three five-year examples, with the missing costs left visible

Five years makes a recurring payment easier to assess alongside the website purchase. It does not make uncertain costs certain.

The examples use today's verified fees and hold them unchanged for five years. There are no assumed price increases, exchange rates, extra usage or paid owner hours. They show component subtotals, not complete budgets or forecasts. The three arrangements also serve different websites; an online shop and a content-led business site have different requirements.

1. An owner-managed Shopify store

Use Shopify Basic's regular annual-billing rate of AUD42/month equivalent. That produces AUD504 per year and AUD2,520 over five years, before any GST billed. It excludes the introductory promotion.

For an Australian buyer charged 10% GST throughout this example, those payments become AUD554.40 per year and AUD2,772 over five years. Shopify describes a subscription GST exemption for GST-registered Australian businesses that add their ABN. Check your actual billing setup. Shopify's billing guidance explains the conditions.

Known: the current platform price and billing basis. Modelled: five years at that unchanged rate. Not priced: domain, paid apps, specialist theme work, store management and owner labour. Sales-related charges are excluded too.

In this example, the owner manages product information and ordinary content. Someone still needs to arrange specialist changes and check the store's customer paths when relevant changes occur. Paying Shopify does not purchase that entire job from an agency.

This route makes sense when the commerce platform fits the store and the business can manage its day-to-day work. If nobody can do that work, add a real management quote before deciding the recurring budget is affordable.

2. A WordPress business site with a care plan

Use Fox & Lee's published Essentials fee of AUD139/month including GST, on monthly billing. Its component subtotal is AUD1,668 per year, or AUD8,340 over five years at an unchanged fee. The offer includes hosting, technical care and 15 minutes of monthly support. Its published cancellation condition is 30 days' notice. Published plan details.

Known: the advertised fee and support allocation. Modelled: sixty monthly payments. Not priced: domain renewal, licences not confirmed included, initial repairs and changes beyond the confirmed support scope. Owner labour is unpriced.

For a plugin-heavy site, first confirm that the provider accepts your particular theme, plugins and custom functions under that plan. Establish who updates and tests them. A published entry plan is not an accepted quote for every WordPress installation.

Then consider your requests. Fifteen minutes of support is a bounded allowance. You cannot treat it as an unlimited publishing, design or development service. If the site needs regular content work, obtain that price and responsibility separately.

The fee may be a sensible purchase when its coverage fits the site and somebody needs to carry the technical work. A more expensive plan may fit a busier site. The comparison should turn on accepted tasks and support conditions, rather than the number of items in a feature list.

3. A custom-designed site on a managed CMS platform

Custom design can sit on a managed platform. For this example, use the Webflow Premium base Site plan at USD25/month equivalent, billed yearly. That is USD300 per year and USD1,500 over five years before applicable taxes. Webflow's pricing is per site in USD; additional configuration or usage can change the charge.

Known: the selected base platform rate. Modelled: five years at that rate. Not priced: domain, extra usage or seats, agency care, custom changes, integrations, content work and owner labour. There is no AUD conversion assumed.

The platform payment does not buy continuing access to the person who designed the website. A team comfortable editing approved CMS fields might handle ordinary updates itself. Structural changes or faults involving custom work can still need a specialist.

If your custom site uses separate hosting and CMS services instead, substitute their actual charges and support arrangements. Do not use this Webflow subtotal for that different build. The useful principle is to price the implemented system, not attach a universal running cost to the word “custom”.

Ask how a future developer will receive the necessary access and documentation. A manageable website needs a workable support route, even when its routine platform bill is modest.

What the totals do and do not tell you

ExampleModelled five-year component subtotalWhat prevents this being a complete budget
Owner-managed Shopify BasicAUD2,520 before any GST billed; AUD2,772 if 10% GST is charged throughoutApps, commerce charges, requested work and owner management are not priced
WordPress Essentials care illustrationAUD8,340 including GSTUnconfirmed licences, site-specific coverage, extra changes and owner tasks remain outside the subtotal
Webflow Premium base-platform illustrationUSD1,500 plus applicable taxesAgency work, extra platform requirements and owner tasks are not priced

The cheapest subtotal does not identify the cheapest complete arrangement. Where a necessary cost is missing, mark it “not priced” until you have an answer. Do not quietly turn the blank into zero.

If a provider gives you a complete ongoing quote, add its accepted charges without double-counting bundled hosting or support. Keep the initial build price beside that running-cost comparison, rather than burying it inside the maintenance subtotal.

Choose the support model your business can use

Self-management suits a stable site when someone can do the required work. You need practical access, suitable knowledge and a route for specialist problems. Willingness alone is a poor backup plan for a busy owner.

Ad hoc support suits occasional changes when ongoing technical responsibility is already covered. Ask how work is booked, priced and prioritised. An hourly rate does not automatically reserve someone's time for an emergency.

A care plan suits a site that needs continuing technical oversight or predictable small requests. Confirm the accepted stack, included tasks and allowance. Check what happens when the allowance is used or expires.

Retained development suits continuing planned work. It can cover more substantial changes when the scope allows. It should not be confused with a guarantee of new leads, rankings or revenue. SEO and conversion work require their own agreed activities and checks.

You can combine these models. A hosted platform, internal content editor and retained specialist can be a practical arrangement. So can one provider carrying the agreed website responsibilities. The deciding factor is whether every necessary task has an owner you can rely on.

What changing providers might cost

A website does not automatically need rebuilding because you change agencies. It might stay on the same platform with a different person managing it. It might need a compatible hosting move. Replacing the platform is a larger job.

Those routes have different costs. Check the notice period, account access, licence position and any standard transfer charge. If a rebuild becomes necessary, obtain a separate scope for it. We cover the rights and access checks in Do you own your website?.

A stated transfer fee belongs in your exit assessment, rather than every year's ordinary spending. Keep it visible without assuming you will incur it. Also identify who keeps the site running during the change and when the outgoing provider's support ends.

Changing providers should leave you with a clear destination and responsible person. Cancelling first and discovering the account arrangements afterwards is an unnecessarily expensive way to learn them.

Get these ongoing arrangements in writing

Send your preferred provider this request before accepting the website proposal:

Please separate the charges required to keep the website running from optional care, content changes and marketing. For each, confirm the payer, included work, responsible person, billing term and what happens when it ends. Please also show what we must supply or do ourselves, additional-work approval, urgent-support coverage and the notice and transfer conditions.

Use the answer to settle six practical points:

  • Which recurring bills are unavoidable for the proposed website, and what will they cost at renewal?
  • Who handles technical upkeep, recovery and repair, including the limits of that responsibility?
  • Who supplies, publishes and checks business changes, and what allowance covers that work?
  • Who coordinates connected suppliers when an issue crosses between them?
  • Who do you contact for an urgent fault, during which hours, and does the commitment cover a response or a completed fix?
  • What changes when an inclusion ends, you decline care or you leave the provider?

Support hours matter. A one-business-day reply and a completed repair are different commitments. Around-the-clock monitoring does not necessarily buy around-the-clock human repair. Get the actual contact and coverage arrangement, rather than assuming it from “priority support”.

You can take the wider signing questions from Questions to ask a web developer. The maintenance decision is complete when the continuing cost and continuing work both fit your business.

Frequently asked questions

  1. You need a plan for necessary upkeep, but it does not always require a separate monthly agency fee. Some work sits with a hosted platform. Some can sit with a capable internal team or an agreed care provider. Check who covers the remaining tasks and what happens when help is needed.
